4 Important Things You Should Know About Your New Dental Implants

Feb 20, 2019 | Restorative Dental Care

Many people choose dental implants rather than dentures because they want a low maintenance option to fill out their smile. But, there are some things you should keep in mind to get the most out of them. Here are some factors to think of so that your new teeth look great for a while.

Strength

The durability and strength of your dental implants are more or less on par with your natural teeth. Different implants are designed for different things, but they are all made to do the same activities you would do with your real teeth. That means they are sturdy enough to enjoy hard candy, crunchy foods, and anything else in your diet. You should be just as careful with them as you would your natural teeth. Just as you have been advised with your regular teeth, you should not chew on ice, and you should be careful when eating popcorn. A kernel can still crack your cap if you bite down hard enough. Be just as precautious with your dental implants as you would your natural teeth.

Dental Adhesives

Unlike dentures, your dental implants are permanently in position. You do not have to remove them at the end of the day and put them back in at the start. Best of all, there is no need to deal with messy dental adhesives. Many people do not realize that using dental adhesives requires more effort than simply applying a new coat each day. Dentures have to be scrubbed to remove residue from the previous day’s adhesive; otherwise, dentures can slip out of your mouth. Adhesive buildup can also make it more obvious that you are wearing dentures.

Dental implants are buried into your gums and topped with a cap, so they look as close as possible to your natural teeth. You do not have to worry about cleaning them every day or having them slip out.

Brushing

Even though dental implants are not susceptible to decay like real teeth are, you still have to brush them after every meal. Tartar and other residues can build on its surface, collecting on your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth. The most effective way to remove residue is by brushing at least twice a day and using mouthwash at least once a day. You should do this not only to keep your gums clean but also to reduce the risk of gingivitis and other oral conditions.

Checkups and Cleanings

Your oral care is not the only routine that needs to continue after getting dental implants. You will also have to see your dentist annually for a checkup and cleaning. That way they can make sure your implants are firmly positioned and check for signs of inflammation or gum disease. Your caps will also require inspecting for fine cracks and to make sure they are relatively free of residue.
